(NYSE: VOD - news), which is a partner of Globalstar Limited Partnership (Nasdaq: GSTRF - news), the partnership of the world's leading telecommunications service providers and equipment providers that built, owns and operates the satellite network. Whoa, VOD admitting they're part of the partnership that built, owns and operates the satellite network! While still not exactly a extolling its many virtues, nor providing much in the way of support, with this press release VOD has at least acknowledged paternity of the tar baby that is G*. Globalstar USA is a sponsor of the Iditarod iditarod.com As I read the PR, the "free use of phones" may only be while for reporters while they are "at its [GUSA's] Media Center located on the third floor, room 3038 at the Regal Hotel in downtown Anchorage." a place where they presumably don't need a satellite phone in the first place. Not a bad idea...media reps that intend to go out on the race course to any extent will certainly understand the benefits of the phone out in the field, and may plunk down some money, accordingly... G coverage in Alaska is not that great, unfortunately: skyplus.icc.com
