Another way of looking at it is that the 5000 level was the end of a wave 3 advance which started in 1990, and what we've been seeing the past year is a wave 4 correction (which is made up of wave 1 down, 2 up, and 3 down) which is now ending. So a wave 5 advance to new highs is still ahead. But the problem I have with Elliot Wave -long-term or short-term - is that it seems like you can pretty much always make a case for whatever you want.
