Texas Instruments To Reduce Production At 5 Factories
By EVAN RAMSTAD

Of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
DALLAS -- Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) is reducing production at five factories as a cost-saving measure, The Wall Street Journal has learned.

The semiconductor manufacturer is closing three facilities for one or two weeks, depending on demand for products. The closings won't occur simultaneously but in a sequence between now and the end of the second quarter. The company is shortening the work week at two other plants.

The first Texas Instruments facility to experience a temporary shutdown is an analog-chip plant in Merrimack, N.H., that was a key facility of Unitrode Corp., which TI bought in 1999. About 300 people were idled in the two-week shutdown, which began Monday.

A spokeswoman said macroeconomic conditions are forcing the company to look for ways to lower costs. The company closed plants temporarily during previous economic slowdowns, she said.
