It's a diverse business. There's much more going on than rs/6000's, but those are what directly competes with SUNW.

To give you an idea of how clueless IBM employees are about the business. Every quarter I know about 5-10 people that sell all their IBM stock because they "know" IBM is going to miss. There's also about 5-10 people that load up on IBM because they "know" they are going to beat expectations. Basically, the business is so big only a few people really have a clue as to how the business stands as a whole.

I can't see IBM being immune to a recession, but they do happen to be lined up pretty well against the competition for the first time in a while. I think the revenue number in Q4 explains this.

Certainly I have heard that IBM's semiconductor business is hurting.

This doesn't jive with me at all. Are you referring to anything Cu/SOI?

the company is desperately tossing every RS6000 possible out the door in a frantic bid not to miss the numbers. Burning through the order backlog, as it were, to make up for weakness elsewhere in the business.

Lou the fiddle wouldn't do that would he? If I were going to bet that the balance sheet gradually blew up, or puked everything out in one quarter, I'd bet on all the shit coming out in one quarter [and Lou will be gone by then].
