I like to think this is not about getting even but of restoring the rule of law. Sending a message to future presidents of either party that they will not be allowed to get away with it.

Actually, you can look back further than Bork for the character assassination approach to effective politics. It goes back at least as far back as the dirty tricks efforts of Donald Segretti and the boys (who had a more colloquial name for it, involving rodent intercourse).

Second, this has not been about character assassination.
I realize that it is about pushing an agenda that isn't wanted by using character assassination as a distraction. With some, DeLay, Burton, and others , the character assassination has become an end unto itself.
