Equality is not equitable always equitable. The tax rates should not be "progressive" in the first place, since even at a flat rate, the rich pay more. It is an inequity that should be cured. It makes sense to ask the rich to pay more, but not to pile on. Thus, there is nothing wrong with giving back to everyone according to their contribution. Second, the taxation of corporations makes little sense, and is only passed on to the consumer, anyway. Employees are taxed, stockholders are taxed, the goods and services are taxed as they are exchanged. Why tax the corporations? All we are doing is subsidizing inefficiencies in colleges and universities through these programs. Anyway, if you have little money, there are numerous avenues. Even middle class kids can get Basic Educational Opportunity grants and subsidized loans, if their parents can prove hardship, for any school that will admit them. State schools are generally still cheap: the University of Maryland is still less that $6000 for a year, tuition, room, and board. Commuter colleges and colleges with flexible schedules permit kids to live at home, and even work. On- line university courses are gaining ground, and are much cheaper. If colleges eliminated some of the perks that professors currently enjoy, like sabbaticals, they could cut payroll substantially. There is no reason to make a big deal out of the availability of a college education. Anyone qualified can get one, though not necessarily on his or her terms......

Flapjack, Are you a socialist? Did you realize that income redistribution is socialism? Btw, did you realize that corporations DO NOT PAY INCOME TAXES. Huh??? Yeah, that's right, the people who buy the products and services pay the supplying corporations income taxes. Yes, taxes have to be paid from corporate profits. So, next time you buy a product, think about the corporate taxes YOU PAY as a part of the purchase price. All products and services would be cheaper if the taxes were removed. Of course, someone with a socialist mindset will have difficulty realizing this.
