IBM Servers: Lead In Sales,Lag In Growth

IBM maintained its lead in worldwide server sales last year, but in terms of growth, it was lagging, according to Gartner Dataquest.

IBM topped the list of server vendors in both worldwide shipments and revenue for 2000, followed by Sun (stock: SUNW), Compaq (stock: CPQ), Hewlett-Packard (stock: HWP), and Dell (stock: DELL).

However, IBM (stock: IBM) was dead last in revenue growth in 2000. The company's revenue rose an almost immeasurable 0.06 percent for the year, to reach $13.74 billion, compared with $13.73 billion the year before. During that same period of time, Sun's revenue grew 43 percent, hitting $9.7 billion.

Rounding out the top five server vendors, Compaq's revenue rose 27.1 percent to $8.6 billion, HP grew 2.6 percent to $7.2 billion, and Dell led the pack, with a whopping 72.9 percent, to $3.4 billion.

According to Dataquest, most of IBM's growth for the year came from its Intel-based servers. IBM officials say the company's server revenue grew 35 percent in the fourth quarter of 2000.

Server revenue prospects for the coming quarters will be interesting to watch, according to Dataquest officials, as the impact of the slowdown in IT spending has not hit server sales like it has PC sales.

Based on the above historical results, it appears that SUNW is the only game in town for a pure play on "server" growth. Let's hope this slowdown is only a one or two quarter event and SUNW can continue to gain market share at the expense of the other big three.
