Raymond: You write: "As for college choices why is it so inconceivable that your own and your parents' combined funding capacity may not add up to Yale, et al., even when you possess the requisite test scores and GPA? That's life."

Such thinking seems to infer, then, that only the very wealthy -- or very poor -- would then be able to enter the top universities.

I have seen this "What, me sacrifice?" thinking of late from many people in the middle class. It seems to be spreading.

As a product of a state university, I am well aware of the fact that thousands of kids every year can and do receive wonderful educations from these institutions of higher learning.

However, my thinking is this: When we tell our children that if they work hard in school and excel, and they fulfill their end of the bargain, then we as parents then must fulfill our end of the bargain if the student aims high and is accepted at a prestigious institution of higher learning. Besides, I'd rather spend my money on my kids than a new car or an expensive vacation.
