JHG, please don't take this the wrong way but your post makes me think a bottom is close....when investors say "no one will buy the product like before" then I know that the avalanche of downgrades and scary headlines is taking their toll.

Data storage is a fascinating field right now with crucial applications for supply chain management, enterprise data mining and interfacing huge companies to customers and suppliers around the world. Sure a company can defer its purchases for a quarter or two if the CEO wants to play it safe, but the need to upgrade to high-speed SAN and NAS over old SCSI backups is pretty clear.

Think in terms of data retrieval and business applications and the issue will start to make more sense.

How the market values EMC going forward is completely unpredictable. But I don't think Buffett ever worried about that except to buy when the market offered him a bargain then wait enough years for the intrinsic value to shine through.
