Joe, I've already said before that the mainstream might not care for the performance anymore.

This is usually said by a company that is behind in performance. Whether it was true in the past or it is true now, I am not sure. There is another way to look at it, which has in the past worked very well for Intel (when Intel had a technological lead).

Suppose 500 MHz is all you need. Suppose a competitor offers 750 MHz for the same price. Now customer, who knows that 500 MHz is all he needs, will see 750 MHz in the store for the same price, which one do you think he will buy?

Pentium 4 and Foster will shine on server and workstation applications, however, where the bandwidth and the performance really does matter ...

What workstation applications do you have in mind? My guess is that Athlon beats P4 on most of them. As far as server apps, I think you are right that the bandwidth here matters (actually, the amount of memory matters as much or more). It will be hard to see if the bandwidth is making any difference, mainly because the licensing issues prevent independent testers from publishing benchmark results.

... and where there is greater control over the software.

What does that mean?

Joe
