Yes but it gets multiplied exponentially just as the chain letter ponzi scheme example. 1 person sends it to 5 people, who turn around and each send it to 5 people and so on.

So for example if the dealers and shorts are borrowing from multiple bullion banks, then they may actually be selling the same borrowed gold multiple times.

If in the end Goldman Sachs is short $32 bln worth of gold for example, then it may never be recoverable at prices anywhere close to what they shorted at if everyone realizes at the same time that the gig is up.
