Another lawyer involved in the pardons was Hillary Clinton's campaign treasurer.

WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton yesterday defended her campaign treasurer's role in preparing legal papers seeking pardons for two tax cheats - saying that's what lawyers do.

At the same time, New York's rookie senator said she was "heartbroken" to learn her brother Hugh Rodham collected nearly $400,000 after successfully lobbying the White House on behalf of two other felons - a convicted swindler and a cocaine dealer.

Mrs. Clinton said she had zero role securing pardons and defended the involvement of William Cunningham III, treasurer of her Senate campaign, in preparing pardon applications for the two Arkansas tax cheats.
