Yes, perverse is the word. Besides AMT the inability to carry back trading losses has really shafted some of the fallen day traders. A guy does well and has fantastic gains which he has taken. Then in the following year he gets killed and loses most of it, but is still ahead by a few hundred %. His prior tax bill for the fantastic gains taken is due and payable, and forget about the losses in the next year.

That is how you see these guys that started with 20k, ran it up to a million and then back down to 200k looking at bankruptcy. They are screwed even though they had overall success by anyone's measure.
