My "feelings" are that it is unethical. By my brain doesn't think it is, because my reason sees the same thing you do. What makes me "feel" it is unethical is the structural inequality that makes poor countries willing to try something rich countries would not allow.

DSCO is a stock I owned until last fall. I believe J&J owns about 25 % of it.

I don't see an ethical problem here. All life is risk, even feeding food to your child. Both taking and not taking a non approved drug carries risk.

When it comes to volunteerism for a hoped for good, the essential elements are that the offer must be truthful, and not misleading, and the volunteer must be informed and competent to understand the risks versus rewards.

In the larger picture, the expectations are to reduce the pain and suffering in the universe. This justifies the research. And the research methods justify themselves by being transparent, truthful, and in good faith.

As far as the concept of unequal care. Isn't that the norm? Should a segment of people in one nation be denied an opportunity to reduce their suffering simply because people in other nations are better off? I wonder what the volunteers think? I think it is their opinion which counts--not mine.

(I say "volunteers" because I assume that that is the basic structure of this offer, with the parents exercising authority. If it is not, then I withdraw my comments.)

Now I must go to seek my own rewards...
