London (February 22, 2001)—The World Gold Council (WGC) announced a fourth-quarter 11% increase in gold demand in the world's leading gold-consuming countries, compared to the same period in 1999.

Although this increase set a new quarterly record, it merely offset the weaker performance of gold throughout 2000, which remained virtually unchanged from 1999.

Annual jewelry consumption was at a record high with 2,902 tons, 4% higher than the record set in 1999.

India, the world's largest market for gold, topped demand for the previous year, and records were also set in Mexico and Vietnam.
