Mike, I think the New Deal is overrated by those of us who look back, but not by my parents who were kids then or my grandparents who were struggling. It gave them hope that at least they weren't alone and somebody was trying something.

There is one way to check speculation: you have to pay your bills when you make a mistake. In the 1990s, big players got rich when they are right and have gotten bailed out when they are wrong. The big firms would be stupid not to speculate given that modus operandi.
