Re: Furthermore, there's the combined interest the US and Israel share in identifying and eliminating terrorist networks, something very close to the Bush administration.

Such a joke! In 1998 PM Netanyahu let the French mess around in East Africa/Comoros without warning the US of an imminent terrorist attack on US embassies in the region.... Just read my report:

Re: Finally, Israel relies HEAVILY on US military technology, and "kissing the US goodbye" will mean losing access to future arms sales, and more importantly, spare parts and ordnance.

Israel basically relies on counter-terrorism warfare, that is to say that the Israeli military doesn't need the whole panoply of a superpower (flattops, strategic intercontinental bombers, nuclear subs, etc.). All the paraphernalia that is useful in taming the Palestinian upsurge is about the same as the Russians are using in Chechnya.... And when it comes to intelligence and electronic surveillance (drones, satellites,...) I guess that Israel's technological know-how makes it self-reliant.

Indeed, my "Byzantine scenario" seems far-fetched... Yet, I strongly believe it's currently unfolding --it's a long, stealth process that, obviously, can't occur overnight.

The recent bombing of Iraq just prior to Gen. C. Powell's visit in the Middle East was just a smoke screen. Long term: Israel's gonna rely on the EU/Russia combo while the US will be kept busy stabilizing their Arab allies (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey,...)

Regards,
Gus.
