I agree, the real source to check out would be Aristotle the mentor of Aquinas.

The real story on "hackamore" is that it is a "North Americanization" for the Spanish jaquima which was part of a headstall that included a rawhide noseband bosal and horse hair reins mecate tied up with a proper fiador. Now it is common usage to call the entire kit and kaboodle a hackamore.

In all fairness you can't blame Salon he has never ridden anything better than an old broom tail.

Hi Gordon,

I corrected average joe's understanding of the hackamore and the bosal some months ago. It was not that he was Wrong with a capital W; It was just that he was technically incorrect, and was not giving the proper recognition to the fact that hackamores entail a huge variety, and they are more than the nosepiece (the "bosal"). They always include the headstall and accoutrements. I certainly understood where he was confusing his understanding, and it was not a significant matter. I tried to be gracious enough to allow foolish quibbling to be left behind. Suddenly, months later, in a totally unrelated discussion with someone else--he jumps in with this silly attack complete with snide remarks and gratuitous insults. I hope he feels better! Its a long time to stew in your own anger. :)

The traditional hackamore (shown here) is made of 5/8" 8-plait braided rawhide "bosal" (the actual nosepiece). The "hanger" attaches on either side of the bosal and turns behind the horse's ears. Beware of look-alike bosals with a steel cable core. They defeat the hackamore's purpose.

This is a mechanical hackamore with a chin chain. The nosepiece is made of preshaped, latigo-covered metal. When pressure is applied, the rider's weight is leveraged against the lower jaw at the chin groove as the chain tightens. This configuration was designed to give the human greater power and does not promote willingness, suppleness or softness in the horse.

I guess this made him mad, mad, mad!! Wasn't intended to...
