However, the Klintons have lowered the bar SOOOO far, that DC is now not much more than a glorified Hollywood. While I am not really in the vein of comparing the US to Rome, it is fitting in some ways. Toward the end, the Romans taxed the middle class out of existence, enslaved the lower classes, and the politicians grubbed all the cash. Clinton has taken the first steps of this by engaging in the grubbing of cash to a degree that is unheard of. Some will say that Dubya will finalize the other 2 steps (actually, quite the reverse is true based on his tax cut, but the media is too stupid to actually look at how it is designed....they only focus on REALLY BIG whole numbers, not percentages). Still, Clinton has done everything he can to divert attention from real issues and have the limelight focus on him and his and all that benefit him and his. Now, when Dubya focusses on issues, people are surprised at how effective he is (because he was so vilified by the media as a moron). However, they diminish him by trying to point out that the issues he is focussed on are misplaced (Iraq/Mid East, tax cuts, school vouchers - they don't focus on the whole education policy). As much as Clinton wallowed in it, it is just as much the media's fault. They propagate and support that behavior. While Hollywood was never really about just entertainment (star's lives have always been of interest to the general public), entertainment WAS the primary stuff it focussed on. Now, Hollywood is as much about itself and its denizens as the garbage it expels for out "enjoyment". DC, in similar fashion, was never totally about just politics. The lives of its denizens was always a point of interest. HOWEVER, it was only in rare cases that personalities were the nexus of the political battle. The Clintons, recognizing how ineffective they'd be as their foibles were aired as public figures, shifted the focus to other people's foibles to keep theirs in some kind of perspective (though so many say it was Clinton's detractors who started it, one only needs to review his history). Hence, the bar is permanently lowered....
