After-hours investors picked up where the last two hours of regular trading left off Friday: buying back into technology staples. They remain cautious, however, as spreads are tight and gains have been marginal. Wayne Angell, chief economist at Bear Sterns, spurred the markets when he gave the Fed interest rate cut a 60 percent chance of happening next week. Does the former Fed governor know something?

Sun Microsystems, down most of the day but closing even, is up a fraction of a percent to $20.88 on more than 3 million shares. Intel, Cisco Systems and Dell Computer are also up slightly. Even Qualcomm, which took a beating during the day on a downgrade from Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown, is up marginally. Trading at $62 after hours, the stock bottomed at $50.13 during the day. Wireless handset makers Nokia and Motorola, both down on a profit warning from Motorola, have edged higher. Nokia is trading up 36 cents at $21.70; Motorola is up 23 cents to $16.48.

Juniper Networks, which jumped 7.9 percent on the day to close at $74.75, continues to gain and is now trading at $75.50. Ciena, also a big mover in the day, is trading at $74.94. The stock closed at $74.50 and was up 7.8 percent during regular trading Friday. Palm, up 11.7 percent during the day, is up to $23.63 from a close of $23.31.

EMC, which had jumped 11.5 percent on the day, is down 61 cents to $44.39 from its $45 close.
