they don't mind paying up for the stuff .. there was a peice on NPR about it ... it's a form of entertainment for them. It really is a different cultural thing ...

Smaller geography= less distance per tower=less output needed for transmision.

If you go to a place called Electric City in Tokyo you will find all of the gadgets "we" don't have "yet", gadgets the Japanese have had for "years"... for example onboard navigation has been around Japan for a very long while. Here it is just getting started. etc...
