now that you mention windoctor (one of symantec's norton utilities components), it offers the very best in the way of user choices.

when errors are found, the ensuing dialog provides about four possible repair options, ranging from letting windoc fix things the way it wants to, to manually editing files yourself.

i always review those choices carefully, occasionally choosing the manual option, but usually selecting the 'let windoc run wild with your system' choice.
