But for someone who is getting zip they may well opt for something over nothing.

Its exactly this attitude by corporate America that is a major cause of the problem. The troublesome part is that NIKE, K Mart, WAL Mart , JCPenny, could do a great deal to alleviate word poverty by seeing to it that the workers of their suppliers treat their workers in a better manner. Does any viewer of these threads care if they pay $63.00 or $63.50 for a pair of running shoes from WalMart. The $.50 difference would be the difference between a slave wage and a living wage in many third world countries.

I think that we as Americans have grown indifferent to these matters. But I believe that Malcom X was right when he said, "You are either part of the problem or part of the solution" We have all been part of the problem.

This is the problem we face. Corporate America sets a low hurdle for daily wages, and it is lowered every year by competition....er exploitation. Many of the people we are talking about do not have the luxury of minimum wage, unions etc. In fact in many countries the governemnts have actually promised the Walmarts and Nikes of the world they will clamp down on any union activity which may arise.

The implication of your approach is none of the seven would have a living - how is that better?

Nonsense. A raise of 50% for 1.3 Billion workers around the world would equate to 50 cents a day! I am more than willing to see that someone has decent housing, clothes etc. 1.3 Billion people live on less than $1 a day; 3 Billion live on less than $2 a day.

BTW, these miracles you talk of are actually a mirage. In many third world countries, the people are only given an inferior grade of rice because the good stuff is exported to the west(as with many other things). The rice they use does not contain all of the nutrients of the rice that you or I receive. Too many people really believe that a "free-market" approach levels the playing field for all. This is utter nonsense as many third wortld countries now have debt service rivaling their health and education budgets combined. Before you claim miracles, look a little deeper to see what is actually going on.
