What are these chips going to be doing from between this year and 04/ 05?

I think that Jacobs is implying that the proponents of W-CDMA are ignoring the amount of time it will take to fine-tune the W-CDMA networks. Qualcomm had IS-95A chipsets long before commercialization occurred.

I posted before that Qualcomm announcing a delay was big news....I think I have to take back that assertion. I can think of at least 4 or 5 companies from the same statement would carry more weight. Each of these companies has no vested interest in a W-CDMA delay.

1) NTT Docomo
2) NEC
3) Ericsson
4) Matsushita (Panasonic)
5) Toshiba

Alcatel doesnt rank in the top 10 of companies I would put my trust in (do they have a single W-CDMA contract?). Qualcomm also has a vested interest in W-CDMA being delayed (if they can convince a European telco to switch). I think a report of W-CDMA's delay by a company that has invested more of its time, money, and image would give a far better insite into W-CDMA's future.

Another question is what is DOCOMO coming out with in may

Per head of Lucent Wireless Division (from last May), DoCoMo is coming out with (what is effectively) wCDMA-99. It will not be true 3G since it will not be able to produce the data rates required by 3G specifications.
