No, I was suggesting that he was being too generous and anthropocentric, even though he tries not to, it would appear from the quotes. Maybe I am a misanthrope! I just feel like most of us, even our intellectuals, consider us quite a piece of work - a marvel. I'm not that awed by a creature that does what we do. We sometimes recognize our faults, but many amongst us would have us wink at them as though they were the deeds of a naughty child.

I like this one I clipped below, but am not sure we are "triumph of volition". In many ways we are creatures of COMPLEX habit, blind to the truth of our nature by the superficial variations of the underlying pattern.

Man is many things -- he is protean, elusive, capable of great good and appalling evil. He is what he is -- a reservoir of indeterminism. He represents the genuine triumph of volition, life's near evasion of the forces that have molded it.
