Dan: SSB came out with a report saying that NOK and ERICY did not have any GPRS phones at the show in Cannes last week. They said the ones that did exist were very limited. Alcatel came out the other day and said that they would not have a GPRS handset until 2004. Of course, GPRS handset makers come out every day and give promises they can't fulfill. "This is the year of GPRS," according to ERICY. Hnece, SSB downgrades ERICY & NOK because they don't have any handsets to fill their own pipelines.

GPRS handsets are the CDMAONE equivalent of today's current WAP phones. As a data backbone for a WCDMA system, they are insufficient to provide 3G killer app's like full motion video. At a time when 1xEV is providing full blown 3G benefits in Korea, Japan, and the US this year, why should European telecom companies waste any more time or money on GPRS solutions that have no value added. Too bad the press won't make fun of GPRS like they will cdmaOne.
