Fund Flows

Net cash inflows to Equity Funds total $2.0 Billion for the week ended 2/21/01--with most going to Large Cap and Aggressive Growth Funds.

Technology Funds continue to report outflows. Technology sector assets have declined by 22% in the last four weeks due to market performance.

International Equity Funds report outflows from all emerging and developed regions ($375 Million).

Taxable Bonds report inflows for the 8th consecutive week ($592 Million), with 85% going to Investment Grade and High Yield Corporate Bond Funds.
January Net Cash Equity Inflows Total $25.6 Billion

Most Equity Funds report decreased cash inflows from share purchases over January, 2000. For the month ended January 31, 2001, 99% of all open-end share classes (8,391) representing 99% of the assets have reported weekly cash inflows of $25.6 Billion or 40% less than the sector reported last year ($42.8 Billion).

High Yield Corporate Bond funds reported January net cash inflows of $4.8 Billion. This supports an inference that less efficient fixed income markets are most responsive to Federal Reserve intervention. The January reversal in investor sentiment toward the High Yield sector from five consecutive quarters of net cash redemptions shows a direct relationship of response by the least risk averse fixed income sectors to Federal Reserve intervention, whether systemic (1/01) or event driven (10/98-see archived articles dated 10/15/99 and 6/16/99).
