Chaz,

That's an exciting idea that really hadn't occurred to me til 'bout a month ago, when GPRS handset realities were being made public by operators and vendors.

I would love to see it. I would love to see the Lucents and Samsungs making statements in the press, and signing up carriers in the field. Why don't we hear about Lucent in Cannes, singing the praises of CDMA2000 and dumping on the other?

It always seems like it's Q against the GSM cabal - I wish there were a very aggressive, very public CDMA2000 infra/handset cabal out there beating the drum of reality, illuminating all with the light of truth.

Perhaps they are, but it sure feels like a stealth campaign from where you and I sit, Chaz.

It'd be nice to see the Q kick up their feet, grab a bucket of popcorn and watch the two camps go to war - to watch the 2 different flavored interests lock horns and battle it out in the marketplace. That's where we should be.

We need an aggressive CDMA2000 cabal to deal with these smoke and mirrors UMTS vendors, if indeed Dr. J. is accurate with his forecast.

PS Chaz, do you get the feeling FUD is flying from both sides? On one hand, Dr. J says 2004, 2005. On the other, you got NOK saying 100,000 umts basestations going in this year, 300,000 next year, with handsets in Q3 '02.

A conundrum, isn't it?

So if as you say, new sprectrum is available in Europe only for UMTS
----------

Greetings Chaz,

This is not correct.

Europe 3G spectrum necessitates application of 3G standard with imt2000 certification.

This includes cdma2000 as specifications evolve. 1xevdo has applied for certification, and should receive same by ITU November meeting... As the standard conforms with imt2000 requirements, approval is most probable. To do otherwise would require a profoundly controversial and entirely political decision that would have profound geopolitical trade ramifications. It would stir dissent among Operators, and the Operators Harmonization Group.

So - it's very likely that 1xevdo will be approved for 3G Europe this year. 1xevdv will follow when the standard is complete. Though if standard work drags out, 1xevdv approval may not happen until as late as Nov. 2002.

Also, language exists mandating that at least one wcdma carrier must exist in each country..... but then alternate flavors could be used... However, who can say how they might react to concrete plans to this effect...
