Cary, I'm all for unions of the good kind as a balance to unbridled corporate power. Non-union American companies who treat their employees well probably wouldn't if they had no fear of their workers getting unionized.

Cary-- I am in entire agreement with the need for unions. In fact, my father was a shop stewart in the teamsters union and I was president of a faculty union.

Management has an obligation to maximize profits and labor has an equal obligation to maximize wages. They both need to make sure that they don't sink the ship that they ride in. I personally get ill when management hires a compensation committee to give themselves huge raises and perks and then cuts jobs. I think that is welfare for the wealthy.

In fact, the cost of labor in most manufactured products is 10-15%, giving room for good wages. Studies are finding the real expense is with middle management and their required overhead-- secretaries, travel, etc.
