I only used the 3% number due to the fact that is the norm in that industry. I see no difference in margin on-line or off.

Exactly, that is where it comes from: it's just another retailer.

At around the same time (Fall 1997), I also stated that Amazon was just a glorified mail order catalogue.

Quite a heresy to say back then.

Neither of these made the popular press until more than two years later, if I recall correctly...
