I didn't know he supported Charles Murray's position in The Bell Curve. Did he express his support in the pages of TNR? LOL, no wonder people dropped their subscriptions.

Well, if his views haven't changed, his attacks on the Left seem to have gotten very enthusiastic lately. His web site is terrific, isn't it? It's rapidly becoming a must read for a lot of people.

That is not quite an accurate description of what happened. He published the most provocative section, and invited responses, on the grounds that it was an important issue to discuss, and that the Bell Curve was well- argued. He did not simply endorse it, however. Anyway, there were many responses published in the same issue as the excerpt, and, of course, many letters to the editor thereafter. Some debated respectfully, some were overwrought. In the end, certain writers vowed to boycott TNR, and many subscriptions were lost. In fact, that was pretty much the final straw leading to the launch of The American Prospect as an alternative to The New Republic........
