Michael et al, If I may say a few words about why and how I started the new thread. For six months I received repeated p.m.s and emails about what a waste of time SI SD had become. In addition, I knew that many posters I wanted to hear from (diana, Michael "Hapless" Happel) were just not posting, or posting and awaiting the inevitable attack. Finally, about 70% of the thread seemed to be taken up with bashing JQP (and to a lesser extent Kollmnh and even me) about "calls" people supposedly made months or years ago. Nobody cared about the "calls" except the cyber nitwits who kept ranting. It was a classic case of Gresham's law; the bad pennies were causing the good pennies to go out of circulation. About 11-12 days ago I emailed a few posters I valued and, with previous comments in mind, asked if they'd be interested in at least looking at a new, moderated and therefore civil thread. To be honest, nobody at that time said, "Oh boy, I can't wait." It was more like, "yeah, maybe, but I can't promise anything." And, also, no thanks, SI SD will recover some time. I fully expected a very slow start and then only about 10 people posting once or twice a day, or not at all. I anticipated a low radar thread of perhaps 60-70 posts per week, in a good week. I purposefully located it (miscellaneous manufactured goods) with an obscure title so as not to be attractive. The results indicate, however, that people actually value civility and will reward it with their time and effort. I have only excluded 3 people so far and do not expect to exercise the founder's right to exclude very often. But it is important to understand that, just because we live in cyberspace with fake names and fictional bios does not mean that the way we treat others is simply without account. In a sense, one is as real in cyberspace as one is in real life. In real life there are penalties for assaultive, repetitive, boorish behavior, and similar penalties apply here in the ether as well. Finally, I didn't start the new thread to empty out this one but rather to start something with rather different ground rules. If I see an issue here or a particularly good post I am likely to post here in the future. With that in mind, I think trading NBR on the long side from 55 - 61 and MDR from 12 1/2 to 15 1/2 looks pretty good. Any other views?
