I may not have read backwards enough, when brees (an old pal) brought this to my attention. My assumption, from the context, was that it was a discussion of mankind's dominion over the Earth, and the creatures thereon. That is the use of "dominion" in Genesis, to which Solon seemed to refer. By the way, dominion is usually interpreted, at least nowadays, as "stewardship", not relentless exploitation, in theological circles.

In regard to human beings, dominion is always too strong a word for appropriate relationships, even ones that require a substantial degree of guardianship. Human beings always deserve a degree of respect that enjoins, as much as possible, reciprocity in the relationship.......

dominion, Yes, I also would like to see Neocon's view on the subject in regard to human responsibility to one another. Here are my posts which started in response to Solon's claim that we have no responsibility for one another.

Solon said, "We are separate persons. You have no claim upon me, and vice versa."

Very presumptuous and prone to EXTREMISM to the point of either ignorance or simply lying to make your point.
You said, "Someone earlier mentioned that they believed they had been granted Dominion (sovereignty, absolute rule) over everything. I don't know what you believe, but this belief would certainly justify ripping out a fetus and letting the mother die; And perhaps someday our society will value youth so highly that this will seem justifiable."
Whoa wait just a minute here bub. You attribute a great deal to my beliefs that simply aint true. First, I never said I alone had been granted a right or power that was not shared universally, as you imply. Secondly, all creatures have rights over me and I have the responsibility to educate my self on the things that would contribute to the well being (not harm) of all creatures. Even my own body which houses my soul has the right to recieve proper nutrition, rest, and healthy stimulation. Dominion in the sense that I have portrayed it comes with the responsibility to influence the well being of others and stand against harm that could come to other creatures.
I made that clear earlier. You are guilty of misrepresenting my statements to serve your own purposes. Not at all decent of you sir.

You sound pretty paranoid dude, but thats OK. Yes I do believe we have dominion over the condition of our fellow creatures on the planet and that includes our fellow human creatures. Whether you believe we were granted this role by a higher power, or not, is of no consequence. What is, is the simple observable fact that we are able to exert control and influence over the well being, or harm, coming to other creatures and that includes human creatures....simple fact, really.
The attitude that we have no responsibility towards one another is negligent.

We are separate persons and we both have a right to life. I cannot willy nilly take action against your right to live, true enough.
On the other hand we live in an ordered society in which we have the responsibility to care for the well being of other creatures, including our fellow human creatures. Some say we have been granted a dominion in this regard. I agree. Then, I do have a claim upon you and vice versa. I claim my right to have you behave responsibly regarding my well being. Rights have no clear definition without being weighted in responsibility. When you try to disentangle responsibility from from rights, you end up with some vague web of entitlements. Very messy endeavor.
