I don't think they outsmarted themselves. They knew damn good and well that they needed to steal the election to win it and so they wanted to recount in large population counties that they could control. Now they are trying to leave the false implication that if they had sought a recount in all counties at the outset they might have won - which the USA Today study also diproves.

To their credit, the Knight Ridder outlet in the Twin Cities printed the FL. recount story on the front page above the fold. However, check out the spin and false insinuation in the first paragraph:
