Yup. Had it happen to me more than once while taking a nice quiet walk in the woods. They always wait until you are right on top of them before they fly up. The Tom's blend in quite well so you can't see them, but boy do they make a lot of noise when they take off. I've been able to call in a group of hens before. They get curious, but then they seem to know whose armed and who isn't. Male wild turkeys are actually quite beautiful in flight.
