IBM PartnerWorld 2001
Rowley: IBM Will Not Match Sun Rebates
By Kelley Damore, CRN Atlanta
4:21 PM EST Mon., Feb. 26, 2001
Peter Rowley, IBM's general manager of Global Business Partners, said IBM will not match the market development fund rebates offered by rival Sun Microsystems.

Speaking at a press conference here at IBM's PartnerWorld 2001 event, Rowley said IBM will maintain what he called the company's consistently strong approach to channel partnerships. Rowley charged that Sun has mistreated solution provider partners and is trying to make up for that with some increased funding.

Sun recently increased market development funds by nearly five times on storage products and nearly double on hardware. Sun raised what it calls its Reseller Development Funds (RDFs) on storage products to 10 percent from 2.36 percent and on some of its computer hardware to 4 percent from 2.36 percent. Those rates are in effect until June 27,
retroactive from Jan. 1.

Although many top technology companies are warning of slower growth, including Sun and storage superstar EMC, Rowley said IBM sees a strong 2001. He said that B2B exchanges and supply chain software markets are growing quickly, offsetting some other slowing markets.

Separately, IBM unveiled a program aimed at offering more flexible partnership terms to smaller independent software vendors.
