I don't know about "courting" death, but it certainly invites an early one. I don't think an actual racer would quibble with that. "Gentlemen, start your coffins" as one writer put it.

And it IS wasteful. As they talked about the gas-milage of these things today, I kept think I shouldn't be watching because that part of it bothers me. But today I didn't care.

And anyone without an attachment to the racer, or racing, mourning him is rather silly. It is a way of life in the southern hills, though. I can't think of what you would replace it with. Granted, until the days of cars you could soupe up and run moonshine in, they managed to find other things to do. If we had bars here, that'd probably help.
