La Dolce Vita - Chappy style:

Facing no serious opponent or re-election race, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's campaign last year splurged on everything from a $160 bottle of champagne at an Italian resort to a fashionable Beacon Hill apartment for his father-in-law.

The spending spree - paid for by Kennedy's campaign and political action committee - included:

A $2,600 per month apartment on Beacon Street for Kennedy's father-in-law, retired Judge Edmund Reggie.

A $160 bottle of champagne at Borgo Il Poggiaccio, a 14th century resort in Tuscany, Italy. Aides said the expensive bubbly was a gift for a fund-raising supporter.

Nearly $44,000 for an election night celebration at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.

More than $1,000 in Boston Symphony Orchestra tickets at Tanglewood.

More than $5,000 worth of tickets to a Don Henley concert at the FleetBoston Pavilion. The tickets were given to donors as part of a fund-raising reception.

A $10,000 year-end bonus to his finance director, Jill Gimmel Daschle, who left her job at the end of the year. Daschle is married to Nathan Daschle, the son of Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle.

A $500 donation to Wisconsin state assembly candidate Jennifer Ehlenfeldt. She is a former Kennedy staffer.

Kennedy spent more than $1.7 million last year from his campaign account, and $576,000 from his PAC, Committee for a Democratic Majority, which the senator uses to pay for out-of-state travel and supplement his campaign spending.
