Samsung Elec says in strategic tie-up with Intel

SEOUL, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co. , South Korea's largest chip maker,announced on Tuesday a strategic alliance with Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) in the Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) chip business.

``Intel will provide needed facility investments for Samsung Electronics to increase its Rambus DRAM production up to 10 million units a month,'' Samsung Electronics said in a statement.

Samsung did not give details on the investment amount by Intel.

Through the tie-up, Samsung Electronics said it will increase its 128 megabit Rambus DRAM chip production to over 10 million units a month starting from March.

It said it would further double monthly production from the second half of this year with a target of securing half of the world Rambus DRAM market.

Samsung said it expects the world Rambus DRAM market to expand to over 600 million units in 2002.

Samsung Electronics shares were down 500 won at 191,500 ($153.6) at 0401 GMT on Tuesday.
