Interesting that you mentioned porn spam. I used to get a lot of that, and like you, were frustrated and was unable to stop it. That was with Netcom, and later, with ATT Worldnet as service providers.

In June 1999 we switched to USWest as ISP, because they were the only one to offer DSL at the time. (btw, DSL is terrific and I couldn't live without it! Plus, it enabled me to get rid of our second phone line.). Spam stopped. And I installed nothing on my system to screen it out, it just stopped. So the ISPs do have ways to stop it if they really make the effort. At least, that seems to be my experience.
