Rustam,

I don't believe that Cisco is in the ADM (SONET Add/Drop Multiplexer) business. The big players are LU, NT, ALA. (Look at the photos on Ciena's home page for perspective.

CoreDirector competition comes from Sycamore, Corvis, Tellium, Agilent, Alcatel, Nortel and a host of other wannabes. The CoreDirector is unique in is ability to roll-up lower bit rate signals (muxing) into a high capacity lamda. This is known as granularity. MEMS switches can only switch entire wavelengths so their capability at muxing is zero.

Sycamore has just announced that they are going back to the drawing boards to redesign their box to mimick the CoreDirector functionality.

CoreDirector has captured ~60% of the optical switching market.

Ciena has announced that they are working on a next generation CD that will contain all of the benefits of its existing electronic fabric along with and optical fabric core, eg a hybrid switch.

>>I suppose NT, LU, and the traditional telcom suppliers manufacture the SONET ADM boxes. Does CSCO as well?<<

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Cisco sells them but as with many products probably does not actually manufacture them in-house (as may be the case with the other traditional telecom equipment suppliers as I have noted ADMs as being quite a common product made by many optical component companies...but I could be wrong as lately Cisco has started to manufacture more optical products in-house...)

>>And finally, does anybody else manufacture a comparable box to CoreDirector?<<

Yes, Sycamore has the SN16000, Tellium has the Aurora, Cisco has the ONS 15900 Wavelength Router (which has had very few wins to date as a product developed from its acquisition of Monterey) and Nortel's HDX which I understand will be ready for trials sometime in Q2 and shipping late this year.

PS Since ADMs are a pretty common product in this sector, you probably could get a more definitive answer to your ADM question by posting it on the Frank C. thread...

Here are a couple of articles about the Cisco ONS 15900:
