Hmmm. OPXS 3000, Terrabeam 1. If only the PR ratio was the same. Latest announcements from Astroterra involve STRV-2 satellite laser communications. Admittedly a significant technical milestone, but nothing excites the investment community like revenue generating installations, unless of course you're after equity funding from the Physics Phd community. The marrying of satellite laser communications(Astroterra,Jolt) to terrestrial point to point laser (Jolt) to high speed enterprise network switching capability(Nbase-Xyplex) is the groundwork for a very interesting future. The recent purchase of the Optiswitch from Astroterra by Skanova shows MRVC leveraging technology from Nbase-Xyplex to provide the switches to connect laser systems to the terrestrial network side. Optiswitch is a Nbase-Xplex product being marketed by Astroterra. Whether this is an example of corporate technical synergy or marketing confusion is unclear.nbase-xyplex.com It would seem then that OPXS is another example of what MRVC is trying to achieve. Take existing technology (Optiswitch), acquire cutting edge stuff (Astroterra), and an installed customer base (Jolt), mix ingredients, let rise quietly for a year or so, remove from oven (IPO) and eat (Spin-off); perhaps washing Terabeam's liver down with a fine Chianti (maybe Hannibal should do a Superbowl commercial for them 8>)...) I just wish that MRVC was a bit more adept at articulating their strategy and execution. From 21st Century: We spent some time at Networld going over the advantages of OA's solution with Dr. Eric Korevaar, founder of AstroTerra and now OA's President and Chief Technology Officer. The main takeaway from our chat was the fact that Optical Access has a lot of real-world experience that their main competitors -- TeraBeam and AirFiber -- don't yet have. AstroTerra and Jolt together have completed over 3,000 installations on rooftops all over the world.Message 14701863 Sidebar: John Schuster (CTO of Terabeam) was a founding employee and key contributor to Astroterra's STRV-2 project.terrabeam.com (The misspelling of Terabeam in the web address is correct). I believe that there was a discussion where it was indicated that Astroterra/Jolt hold a number of patents in the area of free space optics and Terabeam does not. Working around this must be interesting for John.
