The problems are intermittent and not always system wide. While my email is down others on the @Home system say theirs is up, mine is fine and theirs is down. The problems also vary, add that to intermittent and that makes it hard to track down. I have gone long periods of time with no problems at all and that leads me to hope that they have finally solved whatever the problem is and then bam, I'll have repeated problems over several weeks. If I called tech support each and every time that this situation occurred I'd be even more aggravated and the problem would not be solved any faster. I've chosen to address the issues here primarily because sometimes the public arena is the only place to drive it home as to how serious an issue it is for me and everyone else that has experienced problems.

Whatever the issue is (and I know these kinds of problems are not unique to @Home) it makes it very difficult to have any level of confidence in email as a reliable method of communication. I can't emphasize enough how bad this is for public perception of the company and it's ability to resolve problems on their network. Open access is right around the corner. Right now switching costs are high, but they won't always be that way.

OTOH the network itself has been pretty bullet proof as of late. I haven't had an overall outage for over a year and rarely even experience a slowdown, whereas my DSL has been frustratingly slow during the business day.

"I've been reading about the mail problems with @home and I have to say I wonder what the deal is."

Hi Joel- While email seems to be okay right now with me, I can't forget all the other times I've had difficulty. It is downright disgusting. On some occasions, my email took over four days to reach the recipient. I should have mailed a letter.

The other problems I have is with loading pages. It moves at a snail's pace...no matter what the site. Now, on that note, things seem to have *dramatically* improved in just the last week. Apparently AT&T has made some upgrades in my area. I should call and see if they can give me that information.

I have been so frustrated with the service, that I have aggressively been seeking out DSL. To date, there is no one within the necessary 3 or so miles of my house. A couple of companies say they are working hard on the truck rolls. DSL is the same price as AT&T@Home. I figured it was worth a try. I would keep my current service until I was sure the DSL was satisfactory.

I still hold my beloved ATHM shares. I am not sure why. Then again, I have the same thoughts about my dog that wakes me up every morning at 2:30 A.M.

It's good to see the ole gang still posting.
