Where is Amati now?

Part of Texas Instruments and still in the same location in Mountain View.

I understand that JDSU has rather labor intensive operations. Recently I have learned about firms like Newport and Adept who are making equipment to automate various processes of putting together optical equipment. Do you know anything about these firms or about other firms who are engaged in such ventures?

Automation in packaging is a huge growth area and Newport and Adept are bringing out newer and better systems. Young companies are also working hard on developing new techniques that will revolutionize packaging. ("My" start-up is in this space.)

It's okay to send some passives off-shore, but I don't know anyone who'll be doing that with actives. It's almost impossible to outsource the most technical processes and very difficult to send off-shore because of the high level of training that's required.

Someone explained that current manufacturing and packaging practices are barely out of the onesy-twosey Defense contract era. Somewhat better but with a long ways to go in terms of becoming automated.
