That is a bad indicator. What in the world is going on? Did Commerce doctor the statistics the last couple of years?

Did you happen to read Newt's inane op-ed in the WSJ today?

President George W. Bush today introduces his first budget, and it will be widely noted that government is not shrinking. One of the great conservative causes of the past half century -- the pursuit of a Jeffersonian model of smaller government and greater freedom -- will be declared dead by many commentators.

What is Newt's prescription? Apply "technology" to magically reinvent government - make it more efficient and useful to people. Real fresh idea Newt. Nobody ever thought of that before.

Every major private corporation knows how to downsize and modernize in ways that make their customers happier. Conservatives must learn from these techniques and apply them to their own programs so that voters come to expect more and better services from a leaner, more technologically advanced government.

This is a hackneyed conservative dead end - Why can't we take the lessons of private industry and apply it to government? I'll tell you why. Private industry has to give you something for your money. Government gets to put a gun to your head and take it. I don't want an efficient government; I want a minimal government.

Then he takes a gratuitous swipe at folks who should be his allies:

However there is a new strategy waiting to be seized that offers even a bigger step toward conservative ends: technology. Because it is new and different it will at first be resisted by conservatives.

Newt baby, what planet are you living on these days. You find the Luddites in the liberal camp, not with the conservatives.

More evidence that we're better off sticking with principles and ideas and not to invest too much in personalities.
