Solar is 1000 W / m^2, perpendicular incidence angle. Current solar cells have quantum efficiencies of up to 10% That means the roof of your house is more than adequate to meet your needs. You might even be able to sell some back to the grid.

Do you make lunch sometimes, or do you always eat it at restaurants? This isn't an either/or proposition. What is sustainable is that which is based upon the sun. It is really our only power source. All power: nuclear, fossil, wind, etc. are all just repackage solar power. Nuclear is just not from OUR sun.
