Hi Jdaasoc; By now you should know what answer Scumbria is going to give you on this one. He doesn't think DDR provides much benefit over SDRAM, but neither does RDRAM. Since SDRAM is cheapest, that's what he largely supports.

The advantage that DDR has over RDRAM is that it is cheaper. Pricing for PC2100 is still high, but PC1600 is cheap, and Micron (the company that forced PC1600's price down), says that they will force down the price of PC2100 in 2Q01.

A thing you should note from today's press release is that it again validates my smsperling figures showing that RDRAM is still way too expensive compared to SDRAM, and these figures are before the extra costs of RIMMs over DIMMs are taken into account:

The focus on Rambus DRAMs would also give Samsung a positive profit source as Rambus prices were around $15 per unit or about three times higher than that of 64M DRAMs, analysts said.

By the way, if Samsung's (optimistic) estimate of 600 million RDRAM units in 2002 turns out to be correct, what percentage of the market is that?

John,

DDR is lower power than SDRAM, it provides more bandwidth for apps which require it, and it requires less pins on servers for equivalent bandwidth.
