It is my opinion that because we are so very very ignorant, we should minimize our impact upon this Earth as much as possible. We know, for example, the rate at which we are killing off other species. What we cannot know is how dangerous this will be for us. Since we are trapped here, on this planet, I would be very cautious if I were in charge. Same with paving over arable land. Or losing top soil. Or contaminating lakes and rivers with pig feces. Or changing ecosytems with fertilizer and chemical runoff.

Money and commerce are nothing, if you don't have a livable planet. I've been to China- I HATED all those people around me everywhere I went. It's a horrible feeling. I never felt so much like a rat in a cage as in Hong Kong and China. yuck.

I do think however that if we are going to spend more of our wealth and limit our freedom to protect the environment the costs and benefits need to be clearly established.

Way to go, Tim. Now that's a thoughtful and reasonable attitude. The risk of despoiling the planet is so great that we need to be conservative in our use of it. You're familiar with the term "conservative" aren't you?
