ed "now you'll have to track down everything being used to boot to safe mode and find the association with the "stubborn" file." yes, by checking what's running when in safe mode, right? bootlog wouldn't tell me, i don't think, because it doesn't log when booting into safe mode. i can check 'task manager', the rough equivalent of the 'close program' dialog in win98. thanks for the ideas. if i'm not careful, i'll forget what the heck i was trying to open those two files for in notepad. <g3> not that that has ever happened before.... :) mark
