yes, by checking what's running when in safe mode, right? bootlog wouldn't tell me, i don't think, because it doesn't log when booting into safe mode.

i can check 'task manager', the rough equivalent of the 'close program' dialog in win98.

thanks for the ideas. if i'm not careful, i'll forget what the heck i was trying to open those two files for in notepad. <g3> not that that has ever happened before....
