John, It provides about 10% more memory bandwidth than SDRAM (550 vs 500 MB/sec) and less than 1/2 the effective bandwidth of RDRAM (>1GB/sec). The real reason is to gain this 10%+ speed benefit in large system memory configurations of servers (>1GB). I'm not sure where your numbers come from, but they are incorrect. PC2100 provides 2X the peak bandwidth of PC133 and 1.3X the bandwidth of the fastest RDRAM. Actual bandwidth usage is very application dependent. Remember that PC133 beats RDRAM in most benchmarks.
